Support for Hannah Grace
And though she be but little, she is fierce. ~ Shakespeare
Hannah Grace Shultz was born on July 13th, 2013 with a very rare heart condition, Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome, that causes the left side of the heart not to function. She immediately underwent the first of three planned open-heart surgeries. A few months later, she had the second. Conquering them both, she was progressing well and now has grown into a happy and healthy 18 month old giggly toddler. She loves cuddles, laughing with her big sister Addie, cookies, and ‘Let it Go!”
On December 30th 2014, while on vacation with her family in Delaware, Hannah became ill and was taken to the A.I. duPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington. She eventually went into cardiac arrest due to an extremely rare blood clot in her heart and CPR was performed for 55 minutes. Once stable it was determined that her heart could no longer function on it’s own, so on January 2nd, she underwent surgery to receive a mechanical heart called the Berlin Heart. This external heart is keeping her alive while she, and her family, wait for a heart transplant.
Hannah, far from her home and family in Fredericksburg Virginia, cannot leave the Hospital and her team of doctors until she receives a heart transplant. This process could take up to a year. During that time, Beth will have to take an unpaid leave of absence from work, and will live at the Ronald McDonald House located near the hospital. Beth’s 4 year old daughter, Addison, will remain in Virginia with Beth's parents in an effort to keep life consistent and comfortable for her. Addie will travel up to Wilmington with Papa and Gigi on weekends for visits with her mom and sister.
We have created this fund to support Beth as she rebuilds her life in Delaware to care for Hannah.
Hannah continues to defy odds, and conquer challenges, amazing us all with her strength and gumption. There are many difficult hurdles to come on the road ahead, and the best way we can help is to provide Hannah with the love and support she needs to keep fighting. And for Hannah that means keeping her Mom close by her side every minute of her journey at duPont Children’s Hospital.
